In 1992, the former director Klaus Weise established together with his team a new theatre for spoken drama: the Schauspiel Oberhausen. The “Theater im Pott”, also referred to as TiP, was integrated. TiP has a long tradition as a children and youth theatre in Oberhausen and even stages performances in schools and kindergartens. Locations of the Theater Oberhausen include the “Großes Haus” with 428 seats, the “Studio 99” with 99 seats and the “Falstaff” Foyer, an ideal location for book readings, night foyers and musical programmes. In addition to the great literary works, the classical and modern theatre pieces that the Theater Oberhausen stages, one of its special features is to use new unusual locations throughout Oberhausen as a stage, for instance the Gasometer, the famous industrial monument and symbol of Oberhausen or the Amphitheater on the dump of the former coal mine Prosper Haniel at the Bottrop city limits. Other locations used to stage performances include the former Altenberg zinc factory in the Hansastraße and the sewage works Klärwerk Emschermündung. The Theater Oberhausen has become one of the cultural highlights of the Ruhr region, as is evidenced by the fact that it was chosen by leading theatre critics as the “best theatre of the season” for the third time in a row in the Rhine and Ruhr region.
