Landmark of Oberhausen and symbol of successful structural change: the 117-metre high Gasometer between the Rhine-Herne canal and the CentrO shopping and leisure paradise. Built in 1928/29 for storing blast furnace gas, it was decommissioned in the early 1990s, and as part of the Emscher Park International Building Exhibition it was converted into the tallest and probably the most spectacular exhibition hall in Europe, complete with viewing platform.

Until the end of of this Capital of Culture Year 2010, the impressive exhibition "Out of this World - Wonders of the Solar System" can be seen here. It takes the visitors on a journey through the cosmos. Reproductions of the planetary system, fascinating images of alien worlds, valuable historical instruments and the 25m-diameter "largest moon on Earth" clearly illustrate the birth and development of the solar system.

Nonetheless, the Gasometer itself is something to see. The inside of the gigantic steel structure offers a unique spatial experience. And the echo effect resonating 7 or 8 times throughout the structure astonishes visitors as well. Inside the Gasometer there is a glass panoramic lift that goes up to the dome. From the roof, you’ll see the entire western part of the Ruhr region lying at your feet.
