Records dating back to 1307 mention that Graf Engelbert von der Mark erected a “new structure” in Holten. The Von der Marks had won the border dispute they had around Oberhausen with Kleve. To this end, they erected the Kastell and stationed border guards there. A settlement, the former town of Holten, developed here, seeking protection from the Kastell, as was typical during medieval times. Today, the medieval estate is still used as a place for the local traditional shooting club.
