Photo: Peter Behrens warehouse
In 1993, the central warehouse of the former iron and steel works Gutehoffnungshütte was taken over by the Landschaftsverband Rheinland, which opened the central depository for its Rheinisches Industriemuseum in August of 1998. Erected according to plans drafted by the famous German architect Peter Behrens in 1925, the building complex was declared a historic industrial monument in 1989. The plaza in front of the Behrens Building was redesigned in the autumn of 1999. The back side of the building now looks upon projects of Oberhausen’s Neue Mitte such as König Pilsener ARENA, Gasometer and CentrO. After the warehouse in the Behrens-Lagerhaus was closed in 1992 due to relocation of headquarters and production facilities of the steel industry, a building was found close to the main museum building in Oberhausen (the former Altenburg zinc factory behind the main train station) that had sufficient space and the right architectural character for the collection of the industrial museum. Any and all objects that belong to the collection of the six locations of the Rheinisches Industriemuseum and which are not on display or part of a permanent exhibit are stored here in the building and outdoors. The range extends from protective work clothing, steam machines and models of industrial plants through to furniture, smallware looms, printing presses, fabric samples and lab equipment. Guided tours through the collection available at certain times and by arrangement.
