Photo: Town hall
Oberhausen’s Rathaus or town hall is currently located at the “Galgenberg”, the original site of the criminal court and the gallows. This important expressionist building was erected in 1930 according to the plan of Ludwig Freitag, who was one of the most important urban planners in the 1920s in Germany. The contrast created by the combination of light-colour natural stone and dark clinker as well as the combination of horizontal and vertical structures in close vicinity to one another yield an architecture that is typical for the period between WWI and WWII. This contrast symbolises how opposites can interact and complement one another.
