The Friedensplatz was built right after the turn of the 20th century at the site of the former iron and steel works Eisenhütte Styrum, which went bankrupt at that time. Serving as a link between the Altmarkt, Bahnhof and Rathaus, it is ideal for revelling or relaxing. The plaza, which measures 50 by 180 meters, is one of the most beautiful plazas in the Ruhr region. The spacious plaza is underscored by two double rows of sycamores, flower beds and a basin and lined by three-storey buildings designed by the German urban planner Eduard Jüngerich in brick Expressionism style. Arcades and many other ornate details tie together the buildings on the east side (i.e. police headquarters) and the row of buildings on the opposite side of the plaza, including the former Reichsbank, and the adjacent residential buildings. At the north end of the Friedensplatz is the impressive building of the local district courthouse, which was erected between 1904 and 1907 in an architectural style typical of Imperial Germany. The south end has a twin tower complex that includes flats, a hotel and office premises.
